Microsoft has been working on some interesting gestures for Windows Phone that will allow you to interact with your device without having to touch the display, and the company is now ready to show off those new gestures by launching an app in beta.

The app, called Gestures Beta, is sort of like downloading a gesture pack. Microsoft was expected to debut “enhanced interactions” and gestures with a second update to Windows Phone 8.1, but it appears the company thought an app just for Lumia Windows Phone was the better route.

Microsoft has released a new beta app for Windows Phone that should allow users to control a phone call simply by placing the phone in a specific position.

With Gestures , you can control calls and mute your Windows Phone without touching the screen . You can:

• Answer a call by picking up your phone and putting it to you ear

• Mute your mic during a call by placing the phone on a flat surface with the display facing down

• Put the call on speaker by placing the phone on a flat surface with the display facing up

• Silence the phone by flipping it display down

Of course, none of these features are innovations in any sense, given that many devices have included such functionality for many years. Indeed, there were a few handsets back in the Windows Mobile days that offered flip-to-silence, and other similar features.

Nonetheless, Lumia owners will no doubt welcome the addition of this functionality, even if it is only available as a beta release for now. Be aware, though, that due to a limited array of onboard sensors, the Lumia 530, 630 and 635 do not support all of the features offered in the Gestures Beta app.
